Palm Plague Damage
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) APIA (Western Samoa), August 11. Another coconut palm plague has broken out in Western and American Samoa. It has been caused by the coconut stick insect, which grows up to lOin in length and strips palms of every shred of green leaf when present in plague proportions. Weather has brought a sudden Increase in the insects’ numbers, and ragged palms are appearing. Tbe Department of Agriculture in Apia is spraying palm trunks heavily with insecticide to break the cycle of the insect.
