NEW DELHI, Aug. 8.

India’s worst monsoon rains and floods in living memory have killed at least 255 persons, and left a million stranded or homeless, a consensus of reports showed today. Disaster reports were still coming in, a week after official figures put the toll at 129. Reports from individual States took this to 180 before 75 deaths were reported today. The western part of Gujarat is among the worst hit. Fifty villagers were swept away near the cities of Broach and Surat where a 20-mile area has become a lake. Almost all the city of Surat was inundated with waters 9ft deep in places. A report from Bombay today said that a hill collapsed in the nearby Jalgaon district, killing 18 persons who had been trying to escape from the rising waters. Collapsing buildings killed another seven in Gujarat’s Rajkot district. Apart from Gujarat, severely flooded States this year are Assam, Kerala, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Tripura, with lesser floods in Haryana, Mysore, Uttar Pr.adesh, Delhi, and Manipur. Troops, helicopters, and boats are taking part in massive rescue operations.
