“4½m More Refugees”

Increasing world violence has meant that there are new officially 4|m more refugees in the world than at the same time last year, says the assistant general secretary of the National Council of Church (the Rev. R. M. O’Grady) in his report to be presented to the annual meeting of the council in Christchurch next week. “Most of the work of resettlement is a practical attempt to assist refugees to become established in New Zealand,” says Mr O’Grady. “Several programmes at the moment include East European refugees, hard-core refugees in Europe, White Russians, Albanian Moslems, and Chinese from Hong Kong and Indonesia. Consideration has also been given to Asian orphans.” With groups which have arrived already there is often a continuing need for attention. Resettlement committees in Auckland, Wellington and Invercargill have continued to be an important link in the work, and a new committee has been set up in Christchurch.
