Malvern Awaiting Reply From N.R.B. On Lyndon Traffic
Money would have to be made available to provide offroad parking space on the West Coast Highway at Porter’s Pass and Lake Lyndon, Cr W. R. Oliver told a meeting of the Malvern County Council yesterday. Reporting on a meeting betwen the council and Government departments to discuss winter sports traffic problems, Cr Oliver said that there was general agreement that the road should be kept open at al! times, and that no-stop-ping zones should be made at hazardous places. “As the council has made its views clear to the departments and the National Roads Board, and Mr C. C. A. McLachlan, M.P., will take these
points up in Wellington, we should await results from the National Roads Board,” he said, Mr J. 0. Smith wrote asking if he could get land at Lake Lyndon to establish a permanent cafeteria and living quarters. He said he would be prepared to act as caretaker if a domain were established. The council decided to tell Mr Smith that it was interested in his proposal and would discuss it when domain negotiations were completed. Vandals,— Give way and stop signs put up recently at Windwhistle and Glentunnel had been pulled down by vandals, said the engineer (Mr W. J. Bevis), who noted
that these acts had coincided with local dances. Cr G. E. Wright said public opinion was again the signs. Local opposition would die down, said other councillors. Bitumen.—The supply and spraying of bitumen for road sealing would cost the council 3c a gallon more than last year, or about $2500, said Mr Bevis, when the council accepted a tender at 34.9 c a gallon for about 88,000 gallons of bitumen for this year’s road work. The total cost is about $31,000.
