Wage Increase
Sir, —The actions of the Minister surpasseth all understanding. Policy was emphasised to be to hold production costs and see that exporters retained the full value of devaluation. After the “no wage increase” decision, when it was apparently needless, a freeze was ordained. Now, when a substanatial increase has been granted with the certainty of another upsurge leading to another wage demand, unless checked, the freeze is withdrawn. If the employers agreed to the wage increase with the fixed intention of “passing the buck” rather than spending their own money, it is time that they. were severely discouraged. With the Government’s policy of economic stability completely abandoned, little wonder that professional staff are urging their students to follow them out of the country.—Yours, etc., V. WILKINSON.
