4m Tins Of Refuse

More than 4m tins of refuse were collected annually in Christchurch at a cost of little more than $200,000, or about 5c a tin, said the Christchurch City Engineer (Mr P. G. Ccouiar). Addressing the Students Engineering Society's annual meeting, Mr Secular said that the average cost to the ratepayer of this collection was less than 9c a week. The council’s tip was open and tree for the dumping of private refuse on Saturday mornings and it was not uncommon to have more than 1000 vehicles call on a Saturday morning. A great deal of commercial refuse was also taken to the tip by private contractors. The total quantity of refuse tipped in the la«t year was more than 233,C00 cubic yards and at the present tip this was using about 15 acres of land a year. The by-product of this was land improvement, said Mr Scoular.
