OBITUARY Mrs E. Simpson

Mrs Eleanor Simpson died at Timaru this week. She was one of the first deaconesses to be trained by the Presbyterian Church in Dunedin. She taught Sunday School at Concord until she began her training for the deaconess order.

Mrs Simpson, who was admitted to the Margaret Wilson Home in 1966 as the first patient and who remained in the hospital wing until her death, was of pioneering stock, her father being one of the early run-holders in Central Otago and the owner of Nevis Station, where Mrs Simpson (nee Harrison) spent her childhood. Mr Harrison’s association with the Nevis holding came to a sudden end with the big snowfall of 1895 in which all his sheep were lost, and the family then moved to Dunedin and Green Island.

She married Mr John Simpson in 1912, after which she and her busband moved to Waitahuna.

Mrs Simpson is survived by two children—Mrs J. McCulloch (Glenavy) and Mr J. W. Simpson (Mount Hay Station, Lake Tekapo).
