Flapper-Style Hats

Time has imbued the Flapper era with an engaging allure which is apparently going to women’s heads. Spring and summer millinepr is strongly reminiscent of the 19205. Cloches with narrow brims curving off-centre and trimmed with bows or rosettes, capturing much of the flippant gaiety of those times, were shown by Eileen Lilley Millinery in Christchurch recently.

One of the most appealing of these styles was a model in pea-green felt with an upturned brim, named “Fleur” (after “Fleur Forsythe” of the television saga, who wore many variations of this design). Tiny ribbon flowers dotted the crown of a Kelly-green straw along similar line and a multi-coloured bouquet formed the crown of another model in lilac straw.

For those who yearn for a return to wide-eyed naivete, there was an oyster, fine straw model, rather like an out-size boater but worn well down on the head. Large beige roses nestled on the wide brim, en-

hancing the hat’s almost oldfashioned femininity. Turning the clock back even further to medieval time was a peaked helmet for formal occasions in silver lame and sequins. Among the hats which were very much of today, shapes were extreme—high pillboxes, big berets, and a full, ruffled organza.

Colours were mainly strong, including bright orange, vivid greens and lively pinks. The parade was held at the Beauty Centre after a demonstration of Innoxa make-up including a new, translucent powder which provides a light, youthful finish.
