58,523 Passengers On Notional Railway

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 8. The Nelson-Blenheim “notional railway” carried 58,523 passengers in the year ended March 31, the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) said in Parliament today.

A subsidy of $433,310 was paid to road operators by the Government for the service during the year. Mr Gordon, in reply to • question by Mr S. A. Whitehead (Lab., Nelson), was giving details of goods, traffic, and the number of passengers carried on the notional railway. The notional railway carried 72 cattle, 889 sheep, 168,587 sq. ft of timber, and

57,091 tons of other goods from Blenheim to Nelson, and 409 cattle, 5134 sheep, 571,146 sq. ft of timber, 40,711 tons of other goods, and 2186 motor-cars from Nelson to Blenheim.

The revenue earned for the Railways Department from all traffic on the notional railway was $208,188, comprising $5725 from passengers and $202,463 from goods. The total Government payment to the road operators was $641,498.
