Mauger Now Favourite
(N.Z.P.A. Stag Corresponient) LONDON.
Although the New Zealand motor-cycling ace, B. Briggs, four times winner of the world speedway championship, failed this week in the early stages of his bid to win the 1968 championship, another New Zealander is tipped as a likely favourite.
Briggs did not qualify for the final of the European championship but Ivan Mauger, a New Zealander now riding for Newcastle, qualified with five wins in five rides.
The “Daily Mirror” commented that rustiness from a lay-off caused by a crash two months ago put Briggs out The newspaper said Mauger had taken over Briggs’s mantle. “He captured the British championship from him earlier this year. Now he takes over the number one challenger’s spot for the world title.”
