Railway Assured Of Badminton Success

The Miller family assured Railway I of at

least a tie in the inter-dub badminton competitions when Railway beat Mairehau, 12 games to nine, at Skellenip HaU.

G. A. Miller beat the Canterbury champion, P. V. Boatwood, in straight games; R. Miller, who substituted for A G. Duckmanton, played tremendously in the men’s doubles for a win and secured vital games in his singles and mixed doubles; and Mrs M. Miller also won a vital game in her singles and teamed with G. A. Miller in a successful mixed doubles.

Boatwood, who seems to reserve his best play for championship events, has lost to G. A. Miller each time they have met in inter-club competitions, but Boatwood beat Miller in the Queen's Birthday tournament and in the recent Canterbury championships.

In their latest match. Miller led throughout the first set and although Boatwood had a comfortable lead twice in the second. Miller took advantage of some slack shots when Boatwood led 11-10. and won the match In a commanding manner.

R. Miller lost to the guile of B. W. Crofts In his singles but not until he had forced the match to three games.

The last time Railway played Mairehau Railway lost the women’s doubles, but Mrs Miller and Mrs D. Murphy had too much experience this time and won easily in two sets. Christchurch, now in second place, had to battle to defeat the youthful Canterbury I team. When the last matches, the mixed doubles, were played, the match score was 3-3. but the Christchurch players were too experienced and in a dne second match. D. B. Boid and Mrs M. Brown beat G. Ellis and K. Pepper, 15-3, 18-11. '

Although B. J. Wylie and Reid were inferior In their singles matches, they had an excellent partnership in the doubles snd robbed L. Robinson and Ellis of that match. Miss K.
