SERVICE RECOGNISED
Thirty - one years service as a voluntary ambulance attendant for the St John Ambulance Brigade in Christchurch was marked yesterday by presentations to Mrs E. M. Halliday, of Lyttelton, on her retirement.
Office staff, brigade nurses, drivers, and members of the board of the St John Ambulance Association were present at the brief function arranged in her honour. In a tribute to Mrs Halliday the secretary-treasurer of the association (Mr G. A. Brown) said that she decided ambulance duty would be a "good thing to do” in 1938. Her
regular attendance since had been of inestimable value to the ambulance service, and to the many thousands of patients she had comforted. Mrs Halliday, now aged 70, travelled from Lyttelton one day a week during the last five years to undertake her voluntary duty. For the 26 years before this she gave two days a week as an ambulance attendant. The presentations were made by the chairman of the Christchurch sub-centre of the association (Mt D. H. Lawrence) and Miss M. Ferguson, on behalf of the office staff. Mr Lawrence said that Mrs Halliday had given many years of unstinted and valuable service. “She has shown us all, and many persons in Christchurch, what a wonder-
ful service the nursing women provide. It will be many years before such a long period of service will be surpassed.”
The photograph shows Mrs Halliday (left), Miss Ferguson, and Mr Lawrence during the presentation of a nest of tables and a brooch.
