Boilermakers Seek 18% Rise

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 12. More than 300 members of the Boilermakers’ Union are to file a claim for a pay rise of 18 per cent. The decision to make the claim was taken after an eight-hour stopwork meeting by union members today. ,trical Supply Authorities’ Association on Monday, the union secretary (Mr A. J. Neary) said this afternoon. The negotiations would cover the decision of the Court of Arbitration and the union’s claim would be based on the cost of living increase “in the vicinity of 10 per cent,” he said. “There is terrific pressure on this union and on employers in certain centres for an increase in wages,” said Mr Neary. The Otis Elevator Company management has rejected a 7.6 per cent wage application and company engineers and electricians will hold a stop-work meeting on Monday to discuss the rejection. L Wheatley) said in Hamilton today that the employers had advised him they were willing to meet. The issue will be discussed on Thursday. In Wellington talks between the Seamen’s Union and shipowners were adjourned tonight without any decision on a wage increase being reached. The Cooks’ and Stewards’ Union came into line with the Seamen’s Union today and also asked employers for a 10 per cent wage increase.
