Fire Hazard Alleged

Old houses being used as factories and stores were an unnecessary fire hazard and could mean that firemen going to what they thought was a house fire were confronted by an explosive and dangerous situation, Mr T. H. Boyle complained to the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board on Wednesday evening. He was told by two local body members, Mr M. R. Carter (City Council) and Mr D. B. Rich (Waimairi County Council), that there was strict policing of town planning regulations on changed use of buildings. “No house should be allowed to be used for industrial purposes,” Mr Moyle said. That was the City Council’s policy, Mr Carter said. Some cases might go undetected, but the council’s building inspectors were on the job all the time. The only changed use allowed for houses was for staff cafeterias or office accommodation, but this was allowed only in special cases.
