MAGISTRATE’S COURT Youth Turned Lights Off In High-Speed Chase

Evidence that a youth of 19, who had a licence to drive only a motor-cycle, had been chased at high speed when he was driving a car with Its lights off after he had nearly run over a traffic officer, was given to Mr P. L. Molineaux, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Robert William Duff, a tool and diemaker (Mr J. R. JMiilligan), was convicted on* his pleas of guilty of reckless driving, and of failing to stop for a traffic officer, on May 25 He was remanded on bail for a probation officer’s report and sentence.

Traffic Officer J. P. Bowcock sitid that he was talking ta another motorist outside the Hornby Working Men’s Club in Carmen Road, when he heard Duff driving at a high speed west along the Main South Road. Duff turned right into Carmen Road, and the traffic officer walked to the middle of the road, signalled the car to stop, and shone the torch in Duff’s eyes. The car slowed, but when about 10 yards away steered straight towards the traffic officer and accelerated hard. The traffic officer jumped back but said that he was not quick enough. The car hit his right hand and knocked his torch away. He was wearing his reflector belt.

He then leapt into his car and gave pursuit. As he approached the railway line when the other car was about 75 yards ahead, Duff switched out his lights, braked hard and made a left turn into Waterloo Road.

Traffic Officer Bowcock said that he was then about seven car lengths behind, with his red light flashing and siren sounding.

Duff gained to 62 miles an hour, and overtook two cars on the wrong side on a left bend, before Hei Het Road. Duff continued at the same speed at the intersection of Gilberthorpes Road and overtook a car which w’as stationary at the stop sign there, still with his lights out. Two cars coming from the left over the railway line had to brake hard to avoid an accident. The Traffic Officer said that he then lost ground but caught up again near Finsbury Street, where Duff passed another car at 65 miles an hour. Duff then swung sharply into Brixton Street with his right wheels off the ground, accelerated to 47 miles an hour, and went into the gravel. His car snaked from side to' side, and at a right-hand bend left the road, crossed a paddock and crashed into a tree. Duff -had been very upset and had burst into tears, said the traffic officer. He had only a motor-cycle licence. (Before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M.)
