Strenuous Programme In Women’s Basketball
One game of women's in-i door basketball a day is usually considered sufficient for any player but at Blenheim on Friday and Saturday in the South Island championships the Canterbury representatives will have six games in two days. However, the Canterbury selector-coach (Mr R. Entwistle) is confident his team will be equal to the challenge. The team has been thoroughly prepared and although it is perhaps not quite as strong as it has been in re-, cent years it should be able to give a very good account of itself. Its strongest opposition will come from the New Zealand champion, Otago. But the southern side will be without last season's captain, S. Sweney. who is now living in Christchurch and this time will use her skill and knowledge to guide the fortunes of Canterbury. She recently broke her nose in an inter-club match but she intends to play in the tournament
Much will depend on how well S. Rennell combines with her tall centre, P. Wadsworth. Regarded by many as unfortunate to miss out on national selection last season, Rennell promises to again be Canterbury’s most prolific scorer.
Two players, S. Lee and G. Hannam, will be making their first appearance for Canterbury. After Otago, Nelson A and Marlborough will -probably pose the greatest threat to Canterbury's chances. Other teams contesting the championship are Nelson B, Southland and West Coast.
