Obituary

MR H. E. BARNSLEY A prominent figure in the organisation of the unemployed during the depression died in Christchurch recently. He was Mr Herbert Edward Barnsley, aged 90. Mr Barnsley was born in Wales and went to South Africa as a bank clerk. He played an active part in the German rebellion and was deported in 1901 when he came to New Zealand. He assisted in the formation of the Cooks’ and Stewards’ Union, and was a . steward in the Tahiti when the Greatcliff cut her in two in Sydney Harbour in 1912. From 1932 to the advent of the Labour Government in 1935, Mr Barnsley became well known for his activities on the executive of the Canterbury Unemployed Workers' He became nationally known as a worker for their cause. Mr Barnsley was known as a compelling and sincere platform speaker who favoured peaceful methods. It was largely through the of his executive that I riots which broke out in Dunedin, Auckland, and Welling- | ton were avoided in Christchurch.
