Bandmaster Honoured
Flight Lieutenant R. H. Simpson, of Christchurch, principal bandmaster of the R.N.Z A.F. Band and for the last 16 years responsible for its organisation and administration, has been appointed to an honorary commission. Before he enlisted in the Air Force in 1940, Flight Lieutenant Simpson had served with a territorial band. He was a foundation member of a Central Band of the R.N.Z.A.F. in the Second World War and was conductor during a tour of the Pacific and Australia.
While serving at Ohakea he formed the volunteer band at the base and formed station bands throughout the Air Force.
Flight Lieutenant Simpson was awarded the M.B.E. in 1950. Before his honorary commission, Flight Lieutenant Simpson was the longest serving warrant officer in the New Zealand forces.
