Joseph Outstanding In School’s 11-0 Victory

Dominating the set pieces and controlling the soggy ball with far more authority. Christchurch Boys’ High School beat Christ’s College, 11-0, at Rugby Park yesterday.

Boys’ High has now won two to every one by College since the inter-school matches began in 1930. It has had 24 wins—lo in the last 11 years—and college 12. Three matches have been drawn. The foundations of the school's victory yesterday

were laid by its captain and first five-eighths, P. Joseph. His head heavily bandaged because of an injury he suffered last Saturday, Joseph was always calm and steady. His handling under the conditions was first-class and his kicking deep and effective. He did not Overdo the use of his outside men, but on the rare occasions they were brought into play, they were far more dangerous than their opposites. P. Buck (two) and R. King scored tries for School, and J. Matthews 'kicked a fine conversion from close to the touch-line. The teams were: Schoel.—R. Mitchell: R. King, P. Buck, J. Matthews; J. Calder, P. Joseph (captain); R. Austin: P. Henning; B. Penny (vicecaptain), I. Myers, K. Honeybone. R. Wilkinson: R. Bendel, D. White, T. Crowhen. B. Phillipson replaced Joseph late In the second spell. College.— R. W. Fulton: R. N. Homersham C. D. A. Palmer (captain), P. M. Cochrane: J. F. Anderson, L. R. Martin: N. S. Bonifant: J. L. H. Williams (vice-captain); R. H. Blank, D. J. Pyatt. J. M. Oliver, J. S. Rutherford; B. V. Wilson, D. N. J. Hart. J. B. Morten. G. G. Harper came on in the last minute for S. J. Rutherford. Inside Weakness The smaller College pack could not match the strength and fire often displayed by school in driving rushes, but It was able to win almost an even share of the ball from rucks. But College broke down because of its slowness and the weak linking between the halfback and first five-eighths. They were constantly harried by the School vice-captain?- B.

Penney, and R. Wilkinson, and j did not settle to their task until well into the second half. Consequently. College was vunerable to the driving play of the 1 School forwards. For a while In the second half. College looked as though it might score, storming close tn the School line but a relieving penalty enabled School to escape from trouble. Apart irom this foray. College spent most of the game trying to contain the School forwards. Although School was superior in the line-outs. its locks, Meyers (last) and Honeybone (list 21b), getting a large share of the ball, much of this aspect of play was scrappy. Play frequently developed Into a ruck which quickly became a disorganised heap. Fulton Courageous College was indebted to Its fuH back. Fulton, for the score against It not being higher He handled the ball with great assurance and kicked well under pressure. He was kept busy for much of the first half by a series of tactical kicks, but responded magnificently. He made onlv one mistake when he failed to' gather a kick towards the corner by Calder, and Buck fell, unopposed, on the ball to score his second try. Palmer, the College captain and centre, had little of the ball, but made two fine breaks from secondary play. The halfback Bonifant, was forced to leave the field twice with a head Injury, but each time returned to the fray. His play Improved as the game went on and by the end he was throwing out some long passes. School scored In the seventeenth minute when Joseph ran the blind side close to the College line and Kins managed to dive over In the corner. Matthews converted. Five minutes later Buck scored after School had won a ruck 20 yards from the College lifie. The half-time score was S-0. and Buck's second try midway through the second half completed the scoring.
