ELLESMERE CONTROL

Decision Rescinded The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last evening rescinded a previous! decision and will not now call a public meeting to discuss the future of Lake Ellesmere. Mr G. Mugford said the society had received information from a Government department which considered the time was not right to have the area retained as wetlands. Mr N. L Voyce asked how long it would be before the Internal Affairs Department would get into action “We were asked not to do that as then all other sporting bodies would want to take part in the control of the area. They are more or less dampening us down,” he said. “I know legislation has been brought down to change the context of the control. I would like to know what other areas would be controlled before ours. I know they are working on one other area." Mr Mugford said that he was disturbed Mr Voyce had brought up those matters and he was not prepared to answer as the information was confidential.

The decision not to hold the meeting was carried on voices.
