Blaiberg Better

(N.Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, July 8. A bulletin issued by Groote Schuur Hospital last night said Dr Philip Blaiberg’s progress continued his lung complication had shown further evidence of improvement, and so had the lingering effects of the hepatitis which first felled him late last month. He was also much more cheerful, the bulletin said. Professor Christiaan Barnard, the surgeon who gave Dr Blaiberg the world’s longest surviving heart transplant patient, his new heart, said: “It’s hard work, you cannot really say it is a miracle but he is much, much, better.” Dr Blaiberg is still not out of danger, but appears to have responded well to intensive treatment given yesterday with anti-lymphocyte serum to counter tissue rejection symptoms. The medical team at Groote Schuur Hospital decided on this treatment rather than attempt a second heart transplant

Fatal Train Crash.—An elderly woman died in hospital this afternoon from injuries received in an explosion which wrecked two train carriages at Rooty Hill, 26 miles west of Sydney, today. Another 18 people who were injured in the crash were admitted to nearby hospitals.
