FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A depression over the North Island is moving slowly south-eastwards; a ridge of high pressure persists over southern New Zealand. Forecast: North and Central Canterbury.—Moderate south-westerlies; dull and cool with periods of fog and rain, especially near the coast. South Canterbury.—Light or moderate variable winds; cloudy about the coast with patches of drizzle at times; fine inland; cool. Buller, Westland and Nelson.—Light or moderate winds, mainly east or south-east; fine with mild afternoon temperatures. Marlborough Sounds and Kaikoura Coast. —Southerlies, gale in Cook strait and fresh to strong elsewhere; dull and cool with further rain; some heavy falls on the ranges. Central Marlborough.—Moderate to fresh south-easterlies; cloudy with some occasional rain; moderate temperatures. Outlook: similar conditions. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
