Ashburton Win In Corriedale (N Z. Pres* Association > PALMERSTON NORTH, July 9. A Mid-Canterbury breeder, R. Robinson, of Coniston, Ashburton, won the Corriedale section in the Golden Fleece competitions held in association with the twemyfirst annual conference and national wool week of the Massey Wool Association at Palmerston North this week

Another Mid-Canterbury exhibitor, J. H. F. Barton, showed the third-placed Corriedale and D. W. Rose was second. The Golden Fleece award went to Clarke Brothers, of Cromwell, who won the $5OO first prize comprising a silver tea service and a commissioned painting of their farm. They also won the halfbred section.

R. P. Steele, of Waiau, was placed third in the Merino section, after a well-known exhibitor at the Christchurch show, W. Gibson, of Tarras, Central Otago. This section was won by Galloway station, Alexandra.

Fleece Of Year (From Our Own Reporter/ PALMERSTON NORTH, July 9. For the third time a Merino fleece from J. G. Hood, of Tinwald, has won the Fleece of the Year contest held by the Massey Wool Association. The fleece was entered by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. Fleeces from Mr Hood’s stud also won the contest last year and in 1962. But in the Golden Fleece contest, also held , by the association, Mr Hood’s fleece was placed only fourth in a Merino entry of four. Observers put this eclipse down to “break,” but all the top finer fleeces were said to suffer from this fault
