Early Pay-out “Undesirable”

The payment of dividends by the T.A.B. on the day of race meetings was undesirable, said the president (Mr A. J. Nicholl) at the anual meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Nicholl was replying to Mr N. A. Kidd (Franklin) wno had asked what progress was being made in having dividends paid out as soon as possible after the races had been run.

Dividends were paid out on the day of a meeting only in New South Wales. Attendances at meetings there were falling and the decline was blsmed on this factor. "I wouldn’t like to see what happened in betting shops in Sydney occur in New Zealand." he said. People waited about the betting shops throughout the day. Australian racing and trotting officials claimed It was a mistake to have dividends paid out on the-day of the meeting, said the North Island vice-president (Mr R. J. Rolfe). Night trotting was affected by the tying up of money from a Saturday until a Monday, said Mr J. G. Barnes, a member of the executive. He would like to see some solution to ths problem.
