SUPS DELAY TRAIN
Heavy Rain At Kaikoura Almost four inches of rain during the last three days caused slips on the South Island Main Trank railway line south of Kaikoura early yesterday, and the express goods train from Blenheim to Christchurch was delayed for four hours near Feraiehurst The District Traffic Manager of the Railways Department in Christchurch (Mr M. R. Leineweber) said that gangs cleared the line about 8 a-m.
From the time rain began on Sunday morning until 9 a.m. yesterday, 3.56 in was recorded, 2.13 in falling in the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday. The Ministry of Works reported surface flooding on the main road at Tirohanga, 45 miles north of Kaikoura. The shingle fans two miles north of the Clarence bridge were carrying a moderate flow of water, but the road was still open. Numerous small slips occurred in the Hundalee Hills, but the road remained open.
