Rome Faces Strike

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME, July 9. Rome faces a 24-hour strike by all industrial and agricultural workers on Thursday, when the interim Christian Democrat Government of Mr Giovanni Leone is put to the test of a crucial vote of confidence in Parliament. Last night, three powerful Italian unions, including the giant, Communist-led C.G.1.L., joined in the call for the strike. A joint communique issued by the local secretaries of the unions invited workers to take part in a demonstration in the heart of Rome to protest against sackings and demand better working conditions and higher pay. Italy’s Communist Party has promised Mr Leone's minority Government a long, hot summer of labour unrest, but the Government is expected to squeeze through Thursday’s vote, thanks to promised abstentions by the Socialists and Republicans. Another headache for Italy’s new Government was a communique today from the committee of the main railwaymen’s union, which suggested that a national rail strike would be better than fragmented efforts by various sectors of the industry.
