CANAL CLASH

39 Civilians Killed (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAIRO, July 9. The worst Egyptian-Israeli battle across the Suez Canal fo- four months resulted in 39 Egyptian civilians being killed and 25 houses destroyed yesterday, according to a Cairo military spokesman.

Five Isreli tanks were destroyed and a large number of Israelis killed or wounded in three duels lasting 75 minutes, the spokesman added.

The clash was the worst since an Egyptian attempt four months ago to begin a canal clearance survey. The Cairo spokesman said the major Egyptian losses were in the thickly-populated Al-Arabaeen area, to which, he said, the Israelis directed their artillery fire for no known reason.
