VIOLINIST RETURNS
The appointment book of the violinist Denes Zsigmondy, who will give concerts in six South Island centres this month, reads like a world gazeteer. Cities as far apart as Berlin and Bombay, Barcelona and Buenos Aires have played host to the Hungarian - born musician. '
Accompanied by his wife Anneliese Nissen at the piano, Mr Zsigmondy is in New Zealand to give 20 concerts this month and next month for the Chamber Music Federation. It is his second visit to New Zealand in two years. The couple will play in Blenheim on July 18, Nelson on July 20, llmaru on July 24 and Christchurch on July 25. They will also play in Dunedin and Invercargill. Mr Zsigmondy studied at the Budapest Music Academy, where he was awarded a scholarship for overseas travel and study with Francescatti. The first of his interna-
tional engagements took him across Europe and throughout Central and Southern America; and he has also travelled widely in Asia. He is now based in Munich, and is a regular soloist with such orchestras as the Vienna Symphony and the Munich Philhai ionic, and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Miss Nissen was born in Denmark and studied with Professor Lampe, a pupil of Clara Schumann.
“I am delighted to welcome the Zsigmondys back to New Zealand," said Mr A.
Hilton,- president of the Chamber Music Federation.
‘They were able to give only four concerts when they came here two years ago, but made a big impression. The longer tour this year will give more people the opportunity to hear what the critic of ‘Musical America’ recently described as one of the best violin-piano duos performing before the public today.” On their New Zealand tour they will play works by Bartok, Brahms, Schubert, Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel, Franck and Kodaly.
