FRENCH TESTS START

(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright)

PARIS, July 7. The French Government tonight announced that it had exploded an atomic device of medium power at its Tahiti testing ground. This was scheduled as the first of a series of tests in July and August at the station on the atoll of Mururoa. The tests are expected to culminate in the explosion of France’s first hydrogen bomb. The bomb was suspended from a 4500 cubic foot balloon above the Mururoa lagoon.

Some 15,000 French scientists, seamen, soldiers, airmen and civilians are engaged in the project. The test followed a delay caused by poor weather conditions. The French had planned to start the series last Friday and at that time declared an area around the atoll a danger zone. Japan today asked France to suspend the tests. The suspension request was being made through Mr Akira Matsui, the Japanese Ambassador to France.
