Beau Supreme Wins Cup At Oamaru Meeting

Beau Supreme convinced his connections that he will be a force to be reckoned with, in the main flat races at the Grand National meeting next month, when he beat Royal Blue handily and six others easily in the Oamaru Winter Cup yesterday.

Beau Supreme, which is raced in partnership by Mr R. C. Idiens, of Christchurch, and his Washdyke trainer, J. C. McKerrow, gave the Wingatui horseman, B. J. Anderton, a chance to show his best style. While most of the others had their mounts under restraint, Anderton had. Beau Supreme going kindly on the inside. “I knew he didn’t have a very long run so I tried to save him for the sprint home,” said Anderton after the race. Those tactics paid off handsomely. Anderton had Beau Supreme trailing the leader before they had gone half a

mile. He held his position till the home turn, spurted through a gap on the inner near the furlong and kept going strongly for a half-length win.

Royal Blue finished second. Going too keenly could have cost him a win. J. R. Dowling took the hot favourite away from the fence after a furlong, and by the time they got to the mile, Royal Blue was three wide in the open and pulling hard. Once Royal Blue

saw daylight, Dowling had a job preventing him rushing up to the lead. By the time they reached the home turn, Royal Blue had pulled his way up to join Superspan and Kalimera in front, but the battle which had gone on between rider and horse during the race left him without sufficient reserves for the run home. Superspan, which tried to lead all the way, held on for third in a gap of two and a half lengths. He beat Takatua, which had been ridden fairly close to the pace, by half a length. Even Chance, four wide with the leaders on the home turn, was a close fifth. Master Sheeny led in the others.

In spite of his win at Washdyke last Wednesday, Beau Supreme was the third favourite and paid $ll to win. Royal Blue dominated the betting. He carried nearly two-thirds of the win pool and one-third of the place. $28.95 DOUBLE The Oamaru Winter Cup was the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s second winter meeting. Our Wyn improved a sound record for her Washdyke owner-trainer, Mr C. T. Stewart and completed a double worth $28.95, when she beat the staying hacks hands down in the second leg, the Waikaura Hack Handicap. Our Wyn was ridden with good judgment by the Washdyke apprentice, G. R. Heaton. He had the mare three places back and on the outside till the home turn. He brought her forward to challenge early in the run home and she drew away from the others to win by three and a half lengths. Thibell, which improved past Our Wyn near the halfmile and was co-leader near the straight entrance, lasted for second by a nose from

Just Belle, the tail-ender at the half-mile. Just Belle came with one of her characteristic late runs to beat My Era for third. The favourite was late working clear from a pocket in midfield but was only just plugging on when he eventually got within sight of the leaders.

Little could be said for the others, which were led in by Anker Fair, which was one of the early tail-enders but fairly close to the pace on the home turn.
