Deep Freeze Ball
Operation Deep Freeze celebrated American Independence Day with a ball on July 4. As appreciation of friendship and hospitality shown them in New Zealand each American couple had a New Zealand couple as guests. Chief Petty Officer W. H. Long received the guests and the women guests were presented with sprays by Mrs Long and Miss Margaret Lanyon. Commander L. M. Johnson, commanding officer of advance base headquarters, introduced the guest speaker, Mr John R. Bolton, First Secretary of the British High Commission for the South Island. Members of the official
party were: Mr Bolton and Mrs Bolton; the Commanding Officer of H.M.S. Pegasus (Commander R. F. Sanderson) and Mrs Sanderson; a representative of the Southern Military District (Major N. L. Skilton) and Mrs Skilton; the Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes) and Mrs Hayes; and the Superintendent of Traffic (Mr J. F. Thomas) and Mrs Thomas.
