Voting In Japan

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter) TOKYO, July 7. Japan’s 67 million voters are declaring today how they want the problems raised by their new prosperity to be settled. At home, growing wealth has sent prices soaring, and wages struggling to keep pace with the rises. This could threaten Japan’s booming cheap-export trade. A crackle of fireworks and banging of gongs at 46,301 polling stations signalled an early-morning. start to voting for 126 Upper House seats. Final results are expected on Tuesday. Generally obscure politicians are running for election to the relatively powerless Upper House of Japan’s Diet (Parliament).

Yet the five main political parties have placed much importance on the results, which come at the start of a crucial period at home and abroad for Japan.
