Candidates Take Stock

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 8. The American Presidential election campaign has gone into a stage of relatively peaceful stocktaking after months of Intense activity. Candidates for the Democratic and Republican nominations are being met by apathetic crowds who have shown little interest in politics since Senator Kennedy’s death, though the two major party conventions will be held next month. The only real excitement has Involved the segregationist Independent candidate, Mr George Wallace, and this usually takes the form of demonstrations and violence when he appears in strongholds of liberalism and civil rights. The Democrats. Vice-Presi-dent Hubert Humphrey and Senator Eugene McCarthy, and the Republicans, Mr Richard Nixon and Governor Nelson Rockefeller, are all taking stock while planning their next moves.
