SCORPION REPORT
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 8. The American magazine “Newsweek,” reports that the missing United States nuclear • powered submarine Scorpion had been checking on a Russian counterpart shortly before it vanished last May. The magazine says that after leaving Gibraltar on May 1 for Norfolk, Virginia, the Scorpion was suddenly ordered to change course to check up on a Soviet nuclearpowered submarine not far from its course.
“Scorpion completed the surveillance assignment, apparently undetected,” the magazine says. “On May 21, when it was well clear of the Soviet vessel, the Scorpion radioed Norfolk that it was proceeding on its homeward course.
“That was the last message ever received from the Scorpion,” the magazine says in its “Periscope” column. “The Navy is satisfied that the Soviets had nothing to do with the Scorpion’s disappearance.”
