FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A slow-moving depression covers northern New Zealand; a ridge of high pressure extends from eastern Australia on to southern New Zealand. Forecast: Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.— Light winds inland, moderate south-westerlies on the coast; cloudy and cold; periods of drizzle or rain. Buller and Westland.—Fine; mild afternoon temperatures. Nelson.—South-east winds strong in exposed northern areas; cloudy and mild; some brief rain especially near the ranges. Central Marlborough and the Sounds. — South-easterlies, strong in the west of Cook Strait and fresh elsewhere; overcast and cool with periods of rain, mainly light. Outlook.—Showers in the east and about Cook Strait; fine elsewhere.
