Basketball Reps Chosen

Cold, damp condition* affected the women's basketball competition on Saturdya, but there were no upsets. The main interest of the afternoon was in the Possible-Prob-able game from which the Canterbury senior was chosen. Results: Probables 36, Possibles 29. Hew Brighton 38} Sacred Heart 29. Technical 36. St Nicholas 16. Hagley A 29, Cashmere 10. Hagley B 24, Teachers College 22. Points are: New Brighton 20, Technical 18, Hagley A 14, Hagley B 11, Sacred Heart 8. Teachers* College 7, Cashmere 2, St Nicholas 0. The Canterbury senior team, chosen after the match, is: J. Harnett (captain), M. Simeonidls (vice-captain), S. Langrope, S. Norman, C. McMasters, C. Holland. S. Jones, E. Rowley, C. Cottrell. Possibles v. Probables S. Jones, goal defence for the Possibles, figured In several interceptions which helped to give her side an early lead. S. Langrope, M. Holland and S. Norman soon achieved a smooth combination, Norman scoring several goals. With the score 5-3 against them, the Probable forwards, E. Rowley. C. McMasters ana J. Harnett, found form to equalise at 6-all. Determined defensive play by C. Holland, S. Jones and M. Simeonldis upset the Probables’ shooting. Play became scrappy in the second half. C. Cottrell had her opponent well marked and forced the Possibles into many mistakes. Probables increased

the score until they were ahead, 28-21.

An injury to C. McMasters brought S. Langrope (who had replaced the injured A. Skilling) into goal shoot position for Probables, and H. Hutton replaced Langrope at wing attack for Possibles.

The Probable attack continued smoothly. Possibles rallied after C. Holland made good interceptions, but were unable to make up their deficit of seven goals, going down to Probables, 36-29. Teams were:

Possibles: S. Norman. M. Holland, S. Langrope (H. Hutton), A. Cooper, C. Holland, S. Jones, M. Simeonldis. Probables: C. McMasters (S. Langrope), J. Harnett. E. Rowley, C. Cottrell. J. Beavis, A. Ogilvie, J. Brownie. Referees: Mesdames M. Snow and E. Morgan.

New Brighton v. Sacred Heart Sacred Heart held Brighton to a goal for goal struggle in the first half. J. Buchanan (Brighton) and J. Harnett (Sacred Heart) netted valuable long g °After leading 17-18 at halftime, Brighton tightened its attack. Sacred Heart lost many chances with wild passes. V. Price played her best game at goal shoot for Brighton this season. Brighton won 38-29. Referee: Miss C. Brown. Technical v. St Nicholas

Although Technical won by a large margin, St Nicholas was by no means outclassed. Technical was held to a two-goal difference until half-way in the first spell. Then S. Norman netted goal after goal to take Technical to a 20-6 lead at halftime. St Nicholas then upset Tech-

nical with its spirited efforts. F. Weastell and G. Norton netted three goals for St Nicholas before Technical could score again.

Technical then took control and the forwards, M. Holland and S. Norman, increased the score rapidly. Referee: Mrs N. Riley.

Hagley A v. Cashmere Play was uninteresting for much of the game, as the players found difficulty in handling a heavy, wet ball. Cashmere made severel strong challenges but at half-time was down 19-3.

A rearrangement of the Cashmere side proved ineffectual in the second spell. Both sides missed goals and few points were added in this spell. Hagley won 29-10. Referee: Miss S. Langrope.

Hagley B v. Teachers' College Hagley’s two-goal win over Teachers* College was against the trend of play. A reorganisation of the Hagley team, and the late arrival of some players gave College an early advantake.

C. Vincent worked hard in an unaccustomed goal attack position for College. The Hagley defence, N. Ward and J. Mcßeth, played with more aggression, managing to gain several rebounds for their team.

College maintained its fivegoal lead well into the second spell after good work by the defence, S. McLachlan and J. Eddie.

Hagley staged a strong challenge, E. Rowley and J. Wright using well-directed passes to bring scoring opportunities. A second grade player, C. Robb, netted goal after goal to let Hagley win, 24-22. Referee: Mrs A. Elder.
