REPLACING LIFEBOAT

Option Taken In England

The Sumner Lifeboat Institution may buy another lifeboat from England if if can raise the purchase price of $15,000. The institution has taken an option on a 35ft twinengined lifeboat to replace the Rescue 11, which has been in service for 38 years. The English boat is 15 years old but because of its fittings and condition is regarded as a very good buy. To get the money the Christchurch Jaycees will conduct a special appeal early in September. The aim will be to raise the full purchase price rather than settle for an alternative deal of the boat without its engines for $5OOO. The Rescue II has been involved in 45 rescues in the Sumner and Scarborough areas during the last five years. More than half have occurred in the last 12 months.

The replacement would be available for use next Summer if the money came to hand. The option will expire in September.
