Miss Balcon’s Orchid
Jill Balcon, the actress who played the part of Dorothea in the 8.8. C. World Service adaptation of George Eliot’s “Middlemarch,” was delighted, on return from hospital after a severe bout of jaundice, to find a letter from a listener in South America. The letter contained the petal of an orchid and told her how much the sender would have liked her to have the whole flower, if it could have arrived in a fresh condition, as a token of the immense pleasure he had in listening to her performance while stationed in the jungle.
