TOWN HALL PROJECT
Petition For Vote A petition asking the Christchurch City Council to hold a referendum on the town hall project in conjunction with the local body elections this year is being organised by the Avon branch of the Social Credit Political League. “While we sympathise with the Town Hall Committee, which has had its plans frustrated, the building contractors, desperate for contracts, and the carpenters’ union, we consider the proposed method of financing the town hall project to be an extravagant and luxurious way of boosting the Christchurch building industry,” the movement’s candidate for Avon (Mr I. W. Barrow) said. If a majority of residents and ratepayers wanted the town hall, the Local Authorities Loans Board should reconsider the council’s application for loan money, but the people who had to repay the principal and interest had not been consulted or told of their long-term commitment, he said.
