WILLING TO PAY COSTS

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Offers of $l3OO each to send the marathon runner, J. L. Julian, and the freestyle swimmer, G. Smith, to the Mexico Olympic Games were made yesterday. Both were omitted from the New Zealand team announced on Monday. Overseas spirit merchants, Pierre Smirnoff and Sons, through their New Zealand agents, Gilbey

and Sons, Ltd, have offered to pay Julian’s costs. The Auckland District Maori Council has written to the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association pressing for a reconsideration of Smith's case.

The council secretary, Mr Paatu Taua, said that if Smith was chosen, the council would find the $l3OO necessary. Julian, when told of the company’s offer, said he was “astounded and delighted.”
