Rubber Mills Dispute

“We are sick and tired of unions distorting the real meaning of the dispute,” said the general manager of Empire Rubber Mills, Ltd, Woolston (Mr S. M. Betty) yesterday. Mr Betty was commenting on the strike of about 200 workers at the factory over a dispute associated with the dismissal of a job delegate. Mr Betty said that the delegate was dismissed “because he was aggressive and objectionable to a well-thought-of female pay clerk, resulting in her being very upset” The delegate, Mr Betty said, continued to abuse his plant foreman, and when asked to report to the office, where another job delegate was waiting, refused to do so.
