ROSE KNIGHTED FOR LONE VOYAGE

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PORTSMOUTH, July 5. The sailor hero, Sir Alec Rose, will lunch with the Queen at Buckingham Palace next Wednesday—having been knighted today in recognition of his 28,000-mile lone voyage round the world.

The 59-year-old mariner ploughed into port yesterday and after a tumultuous reception went home to a steaming hot bath, a huge steak—and bed, in a room above his greengrocer’s shop. A highpoint of the speeches

and fanfare awaiting the shy sailor was a cable from the Queen: “Warmest congratulations dn your magnificent voyage. Welcome home.” Crowds lined the route 10deep as he and his wife drove through the streets of Portsmouth in an open limousine. About 250,000 well-wish-

ers stood in bright sunshine to greet him. Looking tired and drawn. Sir Alec Rose later told a press conference: “There were many times when I said my prayers and there were times when I felt a hypocrite because I was asking for help when I needed it. “I felt very humble and rather selfish pursuing something I had desired for myself since the days of my boyhood,” he said.
