MORE IN HOSPITAL
Alcoholism Treatment (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 16. The number of people in mental hospitals today because of alcoholism has risen considerably, the Medical Superintendent of Quen Mary Hospital, Hanmer Springs (Dr T. Harrison), said yesterday. Dr Harrison was speaking at a press conference after a three-day meeting of mental hospital superintendents. “Alcoholics once comprised about 1 per cent of all patients. In my hospital in the last year the number has risen to 42 per cent.” The proportion of first admissions of alcoholics in the last 10 years had risen from one in 20 to one in 10, he said. The number of people wanting treatment would increase because of the public recognition that alcoholism was a disease, he said.
