HOOK BEACH CAIRN
Land Journey Marked "The Press’’ Special Service WAIMATE, May 15. A project of the Waimate Historical Society has been completed by the erection of a cairn on the Hook beach. This cairn has been built by! working bees, and all expense | borne by the Waimate Historical Society. It marks the area where I Bishop Selwyn, New Zealand’s | first Anglican Bishop, and Edward Shortland, Protector of Aborigines, met on January 16, 1844. These two men were the first Europeans to travel over land, both with Maori guides and bearers. Bishop Selwyn, aged 34, was on his journey from Banks Peninsula to Otago, and Mr Shortland was journeying from Otago to Banks Peninsula. An official unveiling of the cairn will be arranged.
