Birds In Locker
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 15. Customs officers seized a travel bag containing a cage full of Australian parakeets and finches at Wellington Airport today. The birds had not been declared. A passenger from the 7 a.m. Sydney flight will be charged with introducing the birds illegally. The travel bag was found by Customs officials, who
forced open a locker in the men’s toilet attached to the immigration section at the terminal. About 50 birds were packed into the cage, with little room to move. They made little noise, but apparently were not drugged, said a Customs official. The cage is believed to have been put in the locker before the passenger’s baggage was examined.
