GROUND HAS "DRY" AREA
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. A no-liquor area for about 15,000 people will be set up at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from Saturday.. The ground, with accommodation for more than 100,000, is used for Australian Rules football in the winter. Nine notices, saying “No bottled or canned liquor allowed upstairs,” will t-e
posted at stairways leading to the area. Thirty more notices will be posted in the area itself. A bar will be open under the grandstand in the area, but it will sell only glasses of beer. The secretary of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Mr L Johnson, a former test cricket captain, said: “This is an experiment to protect people from drinkers at the football.
“There have been many complaints from those who have been sprayed with liquor from cans, and people who object to the language some drinkers use. “If people are staying away from football because of excessive drinking at grounds, my committee thinks they may be encouraged to return if they know they can watch from an area where they will not be pestered.”
