APPLES FOR EXPORT
Crop Below Expectation
(N.Z. Press Association)
NELSON, May 13.
The Nelson apple crop failed to increase as expected this year. Exports through the oort will probably be about 1,100,000 bushels instead of the 1,400,000 bushels which had been expected. As a result two ships which were to have loaded at Nelson during the season will not now come.
The peculiar development of the crop, caused by alternatively wet and drought conditions, has also increased the quantity of apples being processed at the Stoke factory of the Apple and Pear Board. The board’s branch manager, Mr W. G. Turner, said today that the season had been disappointing, particularly In terms of packed fruit for export. The millionth case for the season was loaded on the Suevic, which sailed on Saturday. Two further calls will be made by the charter vessel Southgate before the end of the season. She is expected to load 45,000 cases at each call, for Honolulu, Vancouver, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
