RANDOM REMINDER
BUNTER, WHERE ARE YOU?
The two couples were old and firm friends; they lived a few blocks apart, but they had not spent an evening together for about two years. So when one asked the other round for a Saturday evening’s chat, the Invitation was accepted with alacrity. On arrival the visitors were immediately treated to a glass of fine sherry. “When you’ve finished that, we’ll eat." said the hostess. The visiting husband and wife eyed each other with an unexpressed question, but they did not bat an eyelid. They don’t in Fendalton. The doors to the dining room were swung wide and the quartette sat down to an exquisitely set table. There was
a fish entree off the shell, roast pork with all the trimmings, with a choice of home-made apple pie, pavlova. or both, with farm fresh cream. A nicely-chilled bottle of claret was appreciatively sipped during the meal. The talk was the pleasant recollection of families’ boyhood. The oldest in each home had played football together about the fivestone level They went through primary school together, though separated in different secondary colleges, they remained firm friends. Now young men. one was taking a science degree and the other was preparing for teaching. The hosts had reason to celebrate
mildly. That Saturday the senior team father coached had won, the oldest boy’s university team had won, the second boy’s first appearance in the first fifteen of a famous school had been marked by a win, and the smallest boy’s team bad won too—four in a row.
The only other unusual feature of this evening was that the visitors, about 6 p.m., had enjoyed their own dinner of soup, roast joint, four vegetables, and fruit sweet. Another full dinner within two hours presented a challenge, but one does not mention that between old friends. The hosts still do not know what was done in the name of friendship.
