City Upset, Rangers New Soccer Leader

In the biggest upset of the season, Christchurch City lost its 100 per cent record in the southern league and was toppled off the top place in the first division. Western, eighth in the table and knocked out of the Chatham Cup by New Brighton, a second division club last Wednesday, beat City, 1-0.

The new leader now is Rangers, the only unbeaten club in competition, who celebrated City’s defeat by outplaying Queen’s Park, Invercargill, 7-0. Another unbeaten club before Saturday, Shamrock, heavily hit by injuries before the game and suffering a further loss when its playercoach, K. Sudlow, did not come out for the second half, went down to Technical (Christ church). Rangers has a one-point lead over City, setting the scene for their two meetings this week. They will play then semi-final in the Chatham Cup at English Park on Wednesday, and next Saturday clash again in a league match. Rangers, however, will be weakened for both matches

They will be without V. Pol lard and C. Pickrill on Wednesday, and without Pickrill on the Saturday. The two Dunedin clubs. New Brighton, in the second division, renewed its challenge in the race for promotion by moving up to second place, behind Mosgiel on goal average. Shirley-Nomads continued its fine improvement, taking its fifth point in the last three matches, after having lost the previous two. Only two points separate the first six clubs in the second division.
