My Word At Long Odds

Park two starts earlier, came from a long way back to win the North Otago pace, the first leg of the Oamaru Trotting Club's T.A.B. double on Saturday. My Word won by a length from Waitaki Smoke, which came from the tall of the field, and Dieman Lad, which did not get clear until the race was virtually over.

The favourite, James Direct, which carried a small fortune in bets, could do no better than sixth. After pulling hard in the lead, he was left without anything In reserve for the run home and Was beaten at the furlong. Cathpete, which was shading Dryden Smoke, Dieman Lad, and Tyrone at the half furlong, was half a head back fourth.

Dryden Smoke, which showed up wide on the turn after a slow start, was a close fifth, lust ahead of James Direct Tyrone was a length and a quarter back seventh, with a gap of two lengths to Wipe Out, which broke at the start The Auckland owned Ten Grand completed a $866.05 T.A.B. double when he led over the final six furlongs of the C. L. Ayson Handicap. Patman, the off course substitute, made a game attempt to catch Ten Grand after breaking at the start

Palman did well to run Ten Grand to half a length. Young Miss came from the back of the field for third, a neck away, and a length in front of Seafield Countess, which also finished fast. Platform did best of the others. BRILLIANT RUN Friendly Forbes, which is raced by 21-year-old Miss B. L. Jarman, of Darfleld, and was driven by her fiancee, L. C. May, stamped himself as a two-year-old of the highest calibre when he got up to beat his stablemate, Balmoral, and Frozen in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes on Saturday. Friendly Forbes lost at least 100 yd in the first furlong after

starting from the second line. His driver said after the race that he had to avoid the breaking Waiata, and then a two-horse collision.

May began a forward move with Friendly Forbes going out of the straight with five furlongs to run, but he was three wide. Frozen, which was in front from barrier rise, ran clear on straightening up from Swift Action, Balmoral and Friendly Forbes (four wide).

Friendly Forbes maintained his run on the outside to beat Balmoral by half a neck, with a bead to Frozen and a length and a quarter to Swift Action; which made a promising first appearance.
